Countdown to World Thinking Day 2009
19 January 2009
While being fun and informative these events will also raise money to contribute to the World Thinking Day fund and vital WAGGGS’ projects aimed at addressing issues associated with the spread of diseases around the world. Have a look at last year’s pictures and stories to see how we celebrated WTD 2008 and made a difference in many communities.
In Matagalpa, Nicaragua, Guiders and Guides set out to rescue a river last year. Besides learning about conserving and protecting their natural resources, they worked for the benefit of the entire community of this town located in the coffee region of the northern highlands.
WAGGGS has developed a number of resources to help you explore the issue of contagious diseases and useful links to other WAGGGS publications and external websites.
WTD website
The World Thinking Day website has activities and factsheets that offer practical ways to learn about the theme. There are also great fundraising ideas to help you prepare for this very special day for Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting.
HIV and AIDS training toolkit
To help empower young women to protect themselves against HIV infection, to advocate in their communities and to fight stigma and fear, WAGGGS has produced a HIV and AIDS training toolkit. The toolkit includes case studies and activities that have proved successful in several countries around the world, such as Brazil, Peru, Malawi, Kenya and India.
The tool kit is available for purchase on the WAGGGS’ online shop.
World Thinking Day badge
To earn the World Thinking badge each girl must complete two activities from each section. This must include at least one fundraising activity (six activities in all). Badges are available to purchase from the WAGGGS online shop. For Member Organizations working in a co-education environment we have created a special edition of the World Thinking Day badge. It can be purchased from the online shop.
Don’t forget to leave your personal messages about World Thinking Day 2009 on the ‘Message exchange’ board!
Some messages we have received so far include this one from Marilu:
Wow, we do have lots to think about. I appreciate the fun and engaging activities offered on the website; a great place to start. Here’s to changing our world, making it a better place, one girl at a time.

Hello, I am an adult helper in my daughter's daisy troop (6 year olds) here in the USA. For WTD our assignment is to research about the Girl Guides in Sudan. If anyone can send me a picture of the uniform for the young girls or a website link with a photo that would be very helpful. I have learned a lot from this website already. Thank you!
