KGGA National Trustee elected to International Criminal Court

9 February 2009

Kenya Girl Guides Association’s National Trustee, WAGGGS Honorary Associate and OB-PS member Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch, was elected a judge to the International Criminal Court (ICC) based in La Hague last January 2009. She served as a Patron of the Kenya Girl Guides Association (KGGA) from 2000 to 2006 prior to which she was the Chair of the Association for six years. She plays a key role in the leadership and advocacy work undertaken by KGGA.

The ICC is an independent, permanent court that tries persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern such as genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The jurisdiction and functioning of the ICC are governed by the Rome Statute. This important position will focus specifically on women’s issues and the position of children in armed conflict.

She is also the only woman judge in the Court of Appeal, the highest court in Kenya. She is the Chairperson of the National Task Force on the implementation of the new Sexual Offences Act, which addresses gender based violence.

WAGGGS congratulates Lady Justice Joyce on her appointment.
