Development of the movement:
The first Guide company started in the former East African State of Tanganyika in 1928, but it was not until 1935 that Guiding became firmly established, following the visit in the same year of the Founder and the World Chief Guide. In 1938 a territorial council and local Association were formed, and from 1940 to 1950 Guiding spread to all areas of the country. The first executive committee was formed in 1957. In 1964 the independent states of Tanganyika and Zanzibar united as the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Association was renamed.
Programme:
The Tanzania Girl Guides Association uses the Eight-Point Programme. During the past two years, Tanzania Girl Guides have been active in giving service to others.
Relationship to society:
The Girl Guides Association of Tanzania is aware of the needs of the Community around its members and it encourages them to identify those needs and plan to address them where possible. The Girl Guides in Dar-es-Salaam are working with village women in the outskirts of the city teaching them to make a nutritious porridge for their children using homegrown produce. This is an extension of a project where the girls would make the porridge and take it to the ward of malnourished children.
The Girl Guides of the Arusha Region pay frequent visits to a disabled boy and provide him with his basic needs.
Girl Guides in Iringa and Ilula District are working on the AIDS Badge curriculum.
In the Tabora Region, Nzega District, Girl Guides have been working closely with the village women teaching them to make ‘wonder baskets’ a way of cooking without fuel. This area is semi-desert and obtaining fuel is very difficult so this type of solar power cooking is very useful for them.
Communication and Co-operation
Some members in the Association have pen-pals from Associations across the world. The Arusha Region has enjoyed exchange visits with YWCA Girl Guides of Norway and also have very friendly relationships with the Girl Guides/Scouts in Denmark, Holland and USA.
Training:
The Association is lacking in the area of trainers. However, the Leaders are doing the best they can and at the moment efforts are being made to have the Training Scheme accredited.
Outdoor and Environmental Activities
The Guides in the Northern Zone of the country which covers three regions, have been very active in holding Training camps. They have also taken part in the National Tree Planting Campaign. In North Western Tanzania, which covers five regions, Girl Guides have planted areas with trees, flowers and vegetables. They sell the vegetables as a fund raising activity
