Development of the movement:
Girl Guiding in Togo began in 1942 with the formation of the Eclaireuses Unionistes du Togo, and in 1956 Guides du Togo was established. Activities of the two organizations were carried out under the auspices of Scoutisme Féminin du Togo. The members of the Eclaireuses Unionistes du Togo were mainly in rural areas of the country, while the Guides du Togo had members in schools and parishes, and also in the countryside. The Association caters for the special needs of Roman Catholic girls.
Eclaireuses Unionistes du Togo
There had been no news of active Girl Guiding by the Eclaireuses Unionistes du Togo for several years, due to unrest. But now WAGGGS has re-established contact with the Association and the Movement has restarted.
Programme:
Members of the Association choose a theme each year, and programme activities are planned to highlight aspects of it.
Relationship to society:
An agricultural project is run by members of the Association at Agou where employment is offered to needy young people. The project has entailed planting maize, gombo, spinach, yam and cassava crops which are sold to buy more supplies to continue the project. Literacy and basic economics courses are also offered as part of the project.
Similar agricultural projects are carried out at Goumoukope and Tsevie, where women participate in craft projects and learn dressmaking, embroidery, crochet and knitting skills.
Communication and Co-operation
Guides correspond regularly with the Association des Guides du Burkina Faso and work with other youth movements at national level.
Guiding is publicized by the girls themselves, who organize exhibitions of their art, handicrafts and photographs.
Outdoor and Environmental Activities
Guides in Togo are involved in reforestation projects. They have planted trees around the Association’s grounds and have also improved public areas through tree planting.
