Development of the movement:
Guiding was introduced in Chad in 1957 by Sisters of the Holy Cross coming from Jerusalem. The Movement grew throughout the south of the country due to the spread of Christianity. Today, the Movement has reached the capital, N'Djamena and there are units in six regions in the south: Ndjamèna, Doba, Moundou, Goré, Laï and Sarh.
Programme:
The programme is based around four ‘pillars’: Team life, discovery, commitment and progression. Its objectives are to develop girls and young women with regard to good health, intelligence, service to others, manual ability. It aims to prepare young girls to become women and mothers, and promotes international friendships as well as developing relations with other NGOs.
Mission: To provide girls and young women with opportunities in self-training in the development of character and of a sense of service and responsibility.
Relationship to society:
Guides do ‘good turns’ which include community development projects, such as working with special needs children and people from ethnic minorities. Guides also learn craft activities including pyrography, dress making, and macramé which they can sell as part of community development projects. Community development programmes are concerned with: improved health, improved nutrition, easing household chores such as wood and water collection, learning new skills, leadership, reforestation, and digging water wells.
Training:
Guiding in Chad is spiritually led with close relations with the Christian Church. Many of the unit are within diocesan teams and include a chaplain or priest. Chad has a Training Commissioner who organises training sessions and identifies need, develops educational material and co-ordinates the activities of trainers.
Outdoor and Environmental Activities
Guides du Tchad hold camps which teach girls and young women not only how to survive outdoors, but also how to cope in adversity and about sharing and working together. In their programme, there is much emphasis on the environment particularly with regard to tree planting, sustainable development and environmentally friendly disposal of waste
