Development of the movement:
Guiding, like Scouting, existed before independence, but when the revolutionary regime came to power, all the Movements were merged into the JRDA (African Revolutionary and Democratic Youth).
Through the work of a Malagasy missionary nun, Guiding started again on 22 February 1986 and from that date onwards its development has been remarkable, spreading to the whole territory. For example, in Lower Guinea it has reached Conakry, Coyah, Forécariah, Kindia, Boffa; in Higher Guinea Kankan and Siguiri; and in Sylvan Guinea Kissidougou, Gueckédou N’Zérékoré, Beyla, Macenta and Lola.
Guiding is established in the four natural areas (Maritime Guinea, Higher Guinea, Mid Guinea, Sylvan Guinea). All religious denominations are represented in the Movement. It is hoped to continue the spread of Guiding to rural areas.
Programme:
The programme is developed by the training team. All ages are represented (Malèkhèdi, Koffa, Sunkurungheren). It is run by the Commissioners (national, regional, local) and by the leaders.
The education programme offered to the Malèkhèdis, Koffa and Sunkurungheren focuses on personal development on a physical, social, spiritual, intellectual, moral and emotional level.
The programme also caters for needs, such as literacy, in rural areas where the percentage of children attending school is extremely low. It is adapted to the social trends affecting young people.
Community development is a key area of the Guide programme in Guinea: clean-up, tree planting, primary health care, agriculture.
The Association takes part in the conservation of the environment through the recycling of some home refuse (making bags, mats, etc).
Relationship to society:
Communication and Co-operation
The organization enjoys an excellent reputation within the community. It takes part in all the activities organized for young people at national and regional levels and works closely with the Ministries for Youth, Sports and Culture, for the Promotion of Women and for Children, and for National Education and Civic Education.
The Association also works with women’s NGOs in the country and those of civil and religious society. It also has good relations with the Scouts.
Publications are produced on a voluntary basis, but in future the Association hopes to work in partnership with all the agencies of the United Nations.
The Association also participates in the celebration of the Month of the Child.
Training:
The Training Commissioner and her team are responsible for training at all levels. The Association presently focuses its work on the training of leaders. The lessons of the World Bureau field trainer have been productive. The Association is preparing training materials for its leaders and is also working on the development of a training scheme. This training extends to all the functional areas.
